[MS] DOT #1543 - Substrate Asset Game Engine (SAGE) revised
active
Description

https://polkadot.subsquare.io/referenda/1543

SAGE, or Substrate Asset Game Engine, is a proposal by Rosťa aimed at benefiting the Polkadot ecosystem, particularly for junior developers and game developers. The main goal is to improve tooling for .net development in Polkadot, which is used by many projects like Xcavate, Ajuna, and PlutoFramework. Supporting SAGE will help these projects by allowing teams to focus more on their final products and less on low-level details.

Cedric, the main developer behind SAGE and his company Ajuna, have a proven track record of developing open-source tooling for the .net ecosystem and creating advanced on-chain games. Their work is well-maintained and has been beneficial for the community, as seen in the quick responses to GitHub issues and contributions from other developers.

SAGE has already shown its effectiveness in hackathons, with projects using Substrate.Net.Api winning major prizes. The .net tooling developed by Cedric and Ajuna is powerful and easy to use, which is crucial for the success of projects relying on it.

Marketing for SAGE is not necessary, as developers will naturally find and use the tooling if it is useful for their C# applications secured by Polkadot. SAGE aims to provide a full-featured solution for game developers who may not be familiar with blockchain technology.

The value brought by SAGE is proportional to the amount requested, with Cedric asking for a small percentage of the treasury funds. The impact on the ecosystem is already significant, and the potential for growth is even larger. SAGE offers more than just Unity SDK integration, including Substrate pallets and a JavaScript SDK.

While the cost is reasonable, and the team has a history in Polkadot, the future value is uncertain because the team is focused only on infrastructure rather than building with external users/customers in mind. It seems like an internal project for Ajuna as it's laid out currently, rather than a broader good for Polkadot game development (even though hypothetically pallets could be reused).

We want to support builders in the ecosystem. However, we are unsure about the amount of usage this tool will get. Currently, it seems to be more of a tool for Ajuna.

I can see the struggles this and the previous proposal having with acceptance from the community. I abstained from the previous proposal, I support it this time. I think Ajuna are one of the key teams in the gaming vertical, and their work should be supported. They should keep on coding and experimenting, and I think they are passionate about it, which seals the deal for me. Aye.

I had NAY'ed the original proposal but after consideration and the following the discussion that evolved around the proposal would support it this time. While I agree with some of the comments under the proposal as well as fellow DAO members that the proposal seems to be an internal project for Ajuna, I disagree that the effect wouldn't ripple out to Polkadot community and bring game developers into the ecosystem. I think having a different approach to the DotPlay will also afford flexibility to the ecosytem, especially when the ask isn't that much.

I am very happy to see that adjustments were made based on the feedback the community provided on the first proposal. However, I still have doubts about the impact this proposal will have on the ecosystem in general, since I still don't see a greater usability outside Ajuna Network. Given this, I will vote Abstain.

This can help some junior game developers reduce friction in building games. The Ajuna team is also proven and more than half the deliverables are already coded. We support this proposal with our AYE.

I support independent, committed builders like Cedric, particularly when their funding requests meet three key criteria: 1) the amount is reasonable for the work put in, 2) their solution aims to deliver value/utility to other teams/builders in the ecosystem, and 3) they actively engage with community feedback, adapting to the ecosystem's evolving needs. Who knows.. a single visionary lead discovering their project could spark inspiration, adopt Polkadot, and transform the ecosystem in ways we never anticipated.

Gaming is one of the Biggest Vertical that Polkadot has started penetrating, anything that moves gaming Publishers towards using blockchain in their solutions is a Net positive to the ecosystem, the developer has a good reputation in the ecosystem along with the small budgetary need.
