active
Description

https://polkadot.subsquare.io/referenda/1523

  • Cyberpunk Lab is a project focused on improving humanoid robots and connecting them with advanced technology like Polkadot Cloud.
  • The lab will have locations in San Francisco and Shenzhen and aims to develop a special Software Development Kit (SDK) for humanoid robots.
  • This SDK will help robots communicate securely and work without needing a central server.
  • Humanoid robots will soon outnumber humans and be used in many places like homes and factories.
  • The lab will explore how robots can do tasks and be paid using decentralized technology.
  • Key goals include hosting robotics meetups, creating art with robots, and training students in robotics.
  • The project will cost $618,000, which will cover hardware and operating expenses, and is expected to run for a year starting in 2025.

This could be a promising effort and the team looks motivated. The focus on finding product-market fit and commercial adoption for what is built seems to be lacking, as the proposal targets art performances, meetups, conferences and educational programs.

For this amount of money, I'd like to see a target of robotics POCs that can indicate commercial use cases that can inform what is built (instead of just integrating what is available on Polkadot already). And some kind of plan that is aiming for commercial adoption/profitability where Polkadot can play a needed role. Even though it's early, we are witnessing robotics used heavily in many industries today.

It's hard for me to find out what this proposal benefits polkadot.

We are not sure if this is something that is needed in the ecosystem.

This could actually be the exact right time to be investing resources into these types of teams.

There is lots of research about how "smart objects" can benefit Human kind. Feel this is quite far off to where we want to go in the ecosystem.

The Robonomics team has underdelivered in the last 4 years in my opinion so I don't think they should get such a large funding. Will add more details when I have time to outline my reasoning.

Considering Tesla's Optimus is likely to come integrated with Grok/xAI, which will have strong conceptual understanding out of the box, this proposal feels premature. The $618,000 request is a substantial amount, and it's unclear what unique value this project delivers in return, especially given current market conditions. The timing and cost don't seem well aligned.

I didn't really understand how this ties in with Polkadot. I don't see any benefits to the ecosystem.

The proposal lacks a clear product-market fit and a Polkadot-specific benefit. We also highlight the high cost concerns. Nay.

Pros: - Very interesting and valid use case. - The team is the only active one in this field in Polkadot. - I think the overall value of the experiment is worth the amount. Cons: - I think the salaries should be paid quarterly, or every half year, and the team should submit activity reports. - My impression is that the overall costs could be reduced for a smaller-scale experiment as a response to the concerns of some community members. I abstain.
