Terminated

Description

https://polkadot.subsquare.io/referenda/1526

  • Subsquid Lab Official is asking for $310,592.98 to help maintain and develop public SQD Archives.
  • Archives provide important access to data for projects in the Polkadot ecosystem.
  • Popular projects using these archives include Tanssi Network, Talisman Wallet, and Polimec.
  • SQD has moved to a paid model but still offers free access to public chains.
  • In Q3 2024, demand for archival data increased significantly, and the infrastructure was improved to handle it.
  • The SQD network now has 1,139 active Worker Nodes, securely storing lots of data.
  • The proposal is submitted to the Polkadot treasury to cover the costs of running the archives.

Same comments as the last (Q2) proposal: "From what I understand this funding request is for public chains and not parachains, which is mentioned to have transitioned to a paid model. Supporting on-chain archives for public chains is paramaount in my opinion and should get the necessary funding."

Like my last vote to SQD proposal, I think they should charge fees from projects who are using their services, and then the projects can seek support from treasury. IMO even many listed projects can index data with a more economical way. IMO it is more a business than a infra.

they do provide a service that is being enjoy by many chains, they need to make it self-sustaining.

I understand the position about the need for Subsquid to have its own profitability in order to be able to finance itself, however, understanding the infrastructure of Polkadot, where we have the existence of public chains, I think it is necessary that we have services like the one Subsquid offers to the ecosystem.

Critical infrastructure benefits many. A fair ask aligned with past funding. Aye.

For due diligence purposes and the treasury's ultimate benefit, I'd like to see infrastructure experts weigh in on this proposal regarding cost, performance and the availability of alternatives. That being said, I know ecosystem projects value the ability to use SubSquid.

I understand this is an important part of the infrastructure, yet I'm not fully convinced about the $1.2M yearly price tag, especially given the service doesn't even cover system parachains such as Coretime and People.

While I recognize the importance of this service, I’m not fully convinced it justifies a $1.2M annual spend. I believe projects that directly benefit should cover the costs and seek treasury support if necessary.
