closed
Description

https://polkadot.subsquare.io/referenda/1584

This proposal asks for 1,200,000 DOT to extend the Polkadot Marketing Bounty for six more months. The current Marketing Bounty has saved a lot of money, going from spending $16.10 million to $4.47 million, while keeping the administrative costs at 4%. They have worked on many projects with different groups and companies in 19 countries. They have made the Polkadot name more popular and worked on many marketing and communication projects. They have also made important partnerships with companies like BLAST Premier and Serotonin. They want to keep getting money to help launch the Polkadot App and other projects. They are also adding two new people to their team to help with their plans.

We are happy with the new direction of the MB, and we are confident about Polkadot's marketing spending. Therefore, we voted in favour of this proposal.

I would like to see a rotation of curators with Marketing experience, we have lots of those in the ecosystem.

I'd like to see the strategic focus more clearly laid out (e.g. what is the definition of success and what informs the tradeoffs in terms of which projects are funded or not), as well as more detail on how the bounty; that being said I believe iteration has been going in a positive direction.

We would like to see more of a strategic focus. For example, what key metrics does the bounty want to focus on ( DAW, MAW, transaction/month, etc.)? Objective metrics are needed for us to evaluate the bounty's effectiveness properly. This will be very important to establish a clear north star for the community.

I share the vision of PolkaBiz and William. I would like this bounty to set clearer goals and also, demonstrate those goals achieved. It is important to be able to measure clear results of everything that has been done.

From my perspective as an active community member, the Marketing Bounty really hasn't move the needle for Polkadot. I don't find the direction effective, and looking at the spends, it doesn't look efficient either. Results of Jan-Mar'25 payments of $140K to The Kusamarian for Starting Dead Simple are not visible, likewise, $492K in Mar'25 to Distractive for BitWire, $345K to Blast for a Nova Wallet campaign (are there same efforts for the other ecosystem wallets?), $140K to Fracas, etc. These cases should have been documented with rationale, execution details, and outcome. Therefore, I find the documentation inadequate. I appreciate the efforts from the curators, but the bounty is in clear need of a restructuring, and more professional management, given the size of the spending. Nay.

i'm not seeing any real strategy or alignment with broader ecosystem goals. we're just spending money to spend money it appears. what's also concerning is the continued marketing spend ... millions of marketing dollars already spent this year ... with no visible results what-so-ever: no reports, no metrics, no updates, with some of the funded programs having no website or socials tied to the funded efforts (for hundreds of thousands of dollars mind you). at this point, it's clear we need fresh leadership. curators should ideally have real-world experience running marketing agencies, global brands, or ad platforms ... preferably all three. until that happens, it’s hard to justify continued funding. i’ll share more detailed feedback soon, but for now this is a clear nay. more thoughts here: https://x.com/iamflez/status/1930193505214693713

I'm not a fan of big spends on marketing and it's hard to judge the ROI. I don't think simple brand exposure is a key solution. We should focus on problems of polkadot, solve them and then marketing will work after that.
