[INT] PDAO #2 - Mandate for Open-Source Development
active
Description

To the members of Permanence DAO and the wider Polkadot community,

This public internal referendum proposes to make it mandatory for the complete suite of community- and user-facing software produced by Permanence DAO to be developed and maintained as open-source throughout both the development and release cycles. This is to ensure:

  1. The protection of the community and users through open and auditable codebases.
  2. Alignment with the ethos of free software, Web3, and cypherpunk values.
  3. Open access to the knowledge embedded in the code for any interested developer.

This mandate applies to, but is not limited to:

  1. Chat bots
  2. Voting automation infrastructure
  3. Websites
  4. User-facing software products

Current set of tools developed by the DAO members and used by the DAO are fully open-source:

  1. Opensquare (Link, GitHub)
  2. Telegram bot and supporting services (GitHub)
  3. Website (Link, GitHub)
  4. Documentation site (Link, GitHub)

All future software development is to be carried out in a repository under the DAO’s official GitHub organisation, currently at https://github.com/permanence-dao.

A separate proposal will be submitted to determine the specific licence types (e.g. MIT, Apache 2.0, or GPLv3) to be applied to different use cases.

As usual, members are expected to provide rationale for their votes.

I’m all for going open source, but I think we’re overlooking some trade-offs with blanket statements such as "throughout both the development and release cycles.". Cutting out tools like Framer, which is the best tool atm for rapid prototyping, can slow things down and add stress without much upside during beta/early development stage specifically for new website dev. That said, if the DAO is okay with putting in the extra time/money to go fully open source from the start, I’m cool with it. I think we can make it work with the right approach.

Open source is the best way to provide software that can be audited. Open source also accelerates development if there is a clear market fit, and we do posses that, ethereum has been crafting DAO tools as in the "Aragon" development, I firmly believe that mainstream will come through the formation of DAOs around Governance mechanics.

Opensource software is the foundation of blockchain technology, we should expect any tools used by the DAO to adhere to the core principles of our ecosystem.

I love open source and I understand its importance, but I think it also makes sense for closed source in some scenarios. It looks too strict. I understand it in either side though.

An ideological stance is good here
